Atomic and solid state memories for quantum states of light have experienced substantial development in the past decade. Single photon states and entangled continuous variable states have been stored. Discrete quantum states have been stored with heralded fidelities exceeding 95% and continuous states have been stored deterministically with fidelities exceeding 70%. Storage times in a hundred millisecond range have been demonstrated. The aim of the talk is to encourage the audience to ponder upon new applications for quantum memories in the general area of quantum cryptography and quantum communication.
